This is the astonishing moment a supermarket was invaded by thousands of flying termites.

The insects swarmed around the 7-Eleven store before buzzing inside in Udon Thani, northeastern Thailand, on June 1.

Onlooker Watcharakorn Boonbutta recorded the scene as he stepped over the termites while visiting to buy groceries.

This was more frightening than the pandemic. They took over the whole store, Watcharakorn said.

The flying termites, also known as swarmers, are believed to have come from a nearby farm.

The creatures swarm in large numbers during hot weather when they are searching for new colonies.

The video begins outside the shop with thousands of the insects crawling along the ground and flying through the air.

Shoppers make their way around the supermarket with one stepping through a large patch of the termites.

The footage shows a shopper at the counter swatting away a flying termite as he tries to pay for groceries.

A loud buzzing noise can be heard over the audio.

The video finishes on an aisle inundated with the flying critters.
