Having kids has certainly changed the comedian’s home life.

What is your strongest memory of your childhood home?

The crab apple tree. My brother and I would have pitched battles picking up the fruit from the ground and throwing it at each other. At night the tree would fill with possums that kept me up with their own pitched battles.

What do you recall about buying your first home?

The large number of “Danger” and “Do not walk here” signs set up for the inspection. And trying to make an educated guess about how much of a house termites could possibly eat. I did feel that getting the trifecta of termites, damp and asbestos was a real achievement, though.

Have you ever house-shared with flatmates?

I was in shared households for many years. Every Friday night Charles Firth would attempt to mimic Jesus by buying five lamb chops and inviting 400 people over for dinner. The Chaser newspaper was born in those share households. That, and a lot of mould. I miss shared households, but luckily having three kids means you get the same feeling of chaos at home.

Can you share any tips for organising your home?

If you are running out of space, don’t forget you also have a floor to throw things on.

A bunk bed is a great way to increase the amount of space in your house and the number of fights between your kids.

Do you have a favourite room?

I love a cosy lounge room or any room with a fireplace in winter. I feel cold for about eight months of the year.

What is the worst piece of furniture or household item you have bought?

This four-seated stool I bought. So uncomfortable ??? oh, hang on, it was just upside down.

What’s the best household item you own (and why)?

Artworks done by friends. They look great, remind you of your friends and cover the kids’ crayon marks on the wall.

Do you enjoy gardening?

Is that the process by which green things turn brown in your yard through neglect and ignorance? If so, then yes. Otherwise, no.

If you could live in a dream house, anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Having grown up in the country I miss the bush a lot but I’d love to live close to the water. The idea of rolling out of bed and going for a kayak or sail is my dream.

Craig Reucassel presents the three-part series War on Waste, premiering on Tuesday, May 16, at 8.30pm on ABC and iview.
