A portion of downtown Pawnee was destroyed after heavy rains caused the roof of a business to collapse.

Spears Furniture has been a fixture in downtown Pawnee since the 1970s. Early Monday morning a third of the building was destroyed after the roof caved in, blowing out the windows.

Randy Cartmell is one of the owners. He described the call he received around 3 a.m. May 1.

“They said water was running out of our building,” Cartmell said.

The water was left over from Saturday’s storm. Cartmell tells FOX 25 a drain had been backed up and the weight of the standing water was too much for the roof to bear. Now between 30 to 40 percent of it is gone.

“When the building came down and the water came down it washed our appliances from one side of the building to the other,” Cartmell said.

Tuesday crews were out cleaning up the mess. Cartmell says the community’s nature to lend a helping hand has made this hard time a little easier.

“There’s probably been 200 people come by and ask if there’s anything we need if they can help and of course that’s one advantage of living in a small town. When you lose something the whole town loses something,” Cartmell said.

Two buildings of Spears Furniture are still in tact and remain open.
