Borax, Fleas and Misconceptions | Thrasher Termite & Pest …

Posted: February 12, 2019 at 12:44 am

We were shocked recently to read a veterinarians DIY all natural solution to kill fleas in a home. She recommend sprinkling borax on couches, carpet, chairs, and anywhere there was a flea problem. What caused this educated professional to give such very bad advice? Sloppy research. The internet is full of really bad advice, especially when it comes to harmless home remedies. Borax does not kill fleas. Sprinkling borax willy-nilly around a house is not harmless, particular if one has pets or small children. Ready for a well researched answer to the borax question? Read on.

First, lets use words carefully: Boron is a naturally occurring element that is mined and processed into-

Borax (sodium tetraborate decahydrate), a water soluble laundry booster, and

Boric Acid, an ingredient in pest control products

Borax and boric acid come from the same element, but have different properties.

Second, the words naturally occurring apply equally to boron as to uranium and asbestosother naturally occurring elements. All Natural and Naturally Occurring do not mean non-toxic. While boron is in a totally different toxicity class than asbestos and uranium, the comparison is made to help you avoid the trap of unscrupulous marketeers who use the phrase all natural as a synonym for good or healthful.

Borax powder has low toxicity to humans. It is in fact, a really good laundry booster and does a fabulous job of cleaning sinks and tubs. Many of our staff regularly use borax powder diluted in water as recommended by the manufacturer and listed on the box: as a laundry booster and general cleansing agent. While low in toxicity to humans, borax powder should not be inhaled, ingested, or left in contact with the skin or eyes. According to the CDC, borax exposure may cause irritation of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and nose bleeds and breathing difficulty.Ingestion of borax powder is associated with nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The International Chemical Safety Card for borax specifically recommends preventing the dispersion of borax dust and that pregnant women especially should avoid exposure.

Knowing this, why would anyone think that sprinkling borax powder around the house is a good idea? No one should breathe this stuff! Yet, thats exactly what pets will do when snuffling around a borax dusted house. Children may also accidentally inhale borax powder and become ill. The only organisms that borax powder wont bother are insects. Borax powder will not dehydrate insects, nor will insects willingly eat borax powderthats plain silly.

Keep borax powder, where it belongsin the laundry room. Use it as directed, always diluted with water or made into a paste.

Recall when we said to use words carefully? Many of the misconceptions about borax as an insecticide come from the fact that both borax and boric acid are derived from the same element, boron. However these chemicals have different properties.Boric acid and sodium borate salts are active ingredients inpesticides. They areharmful to pests and are ingredients in many baits and other pest control products. In baits, boric acid is combined with other ingredients that insects find tasty.Boric acid acts as a stomach poison and may also have some toxic effects on the nervous system of insects. In additionto being stomach poisons, most borate salts are also abrasive to insect exoskeletons.

The boric acid technical fact sheet from the National Pesticide Information Center states:

Acute ingestion of boric acid or borate salts in humans has rarely led to severe toxicity. Commonly reported symptoms include nausea, vomiting (often with blue-green coloration), abdominal pain and diarrhea (which may contain blood or have a blue-green color). Other less commonly reported symptoms include headaches, lethargy, weakness, restlessness, tremors, unconsciousness, respiratory depression, kidney failure, shock and death.

In other words, dont eat products containing boric acid and keep them out of reach of children and pets. Boric acid is categorized as having low toxicity to humans, but it can still make you sick. Always follow the label when using products containing boric acid or any other pesticide. Remember, if a product isnt toxic, it wont kill pests! So if you want to kill fleas, ants, cockroaches or other pests you will need toxic products. Use as directed to protect yourself and your family.

It was difficult to film a cockroach feeding on bait containing boric acid because Thrasher Termite & Pest Control technicians applied the bait in an area inaccessible to children and pets and cameras!

Termite Control Exterminator in Vandalia, IL | (855) 987-5196

Termites have a bad reputation, and it is well deserved. If your home has become infested, it is time to call upon the services of a termite control company in Vandalia to rid your house of these dangerous pests. When these pests take up residence in your house, both your home and familys safety are at risk. To understand why termite control is important, you must first understand what these insects are truly capable of.Kill Termites Call an Exterminator

The obvious problem with a termite infestation is the damage that they can do to your home. It would take a single termite over 3,000 years to eat the wood in a 1000-sq. ft. house. Take into account that, on average, there are 15 million termites in a single colony, and you can understand how much is truly at stake.

Because the insects burrow deep into the wood, however, evidence of their damage is generally discovered after weeks, months, or even years. That is why it is especially important to consider termite control in Illinois in terms of prevention, and request an analysis on your home. Catching these bugs early is the difference between paying for extermination and paying for costly home repair.

Aside from eating your home, termites are known to sting and bite, and while they do not generally target humans, it can happen. Their bites are not poisonous, but people who are living in homes infested with termites may suffer from allergic reactions or even asthma attacks. This is due to the debris and dust that fills the air after extensive damage to your walls and foundation.

Heating or ventilation systems can especially exacerbate the issue by spreading the irritating particles and dust from their nests. Some people are also allergic to the saliva or droppings. While personal health is usually a secondary reason for treating an infestation, it is arguably the most important. You also need to get rid of the termite queen. The termite queen is the reason for the termite reproduction, so extermination of her is a must.Termite vs. Flying AntTermites are not the only threat to consider. Termite control companies are also able to look for ants, bedbugs, bees, earwigs, fleas, roaches, rodents, spiders, ticks, and wasps. These additional pests can prove to be just as harmful to your home and considerably more harmful to your health. Rodents, spiders, and ticks are known to carry illnesses like Lyme disease. A good pest management group will alert you of these problems as well as fix them when they are on the lookout for termites.

It is always cheaper to prevent a problem than to fix one. It is important to be proactive and schedule regular inspections to seek out and destroy these pests.

Whether you are building a new home or have lived in the same house for a number of years, the last thing you want to cope with is an infestation of termites! These pests destroy the wood in your residence and can quickly turn into complete nightmares. To prevent an infestation of these creatures, you can put into play certain strategies that will keep these pests at bay before they have the opportunity to turn into a serious problem.

Keeping your dwelling 100 percent free of insects and bugs is not something that you can permanently do, but there are things you can do to minimize the risk that they will wreck havoc with your life. Let us look at those now.

One termite control trick worth trying is to install bait stations. To monitor activity by potential subterranean species, you should install bait stations throughout your home. Most of these stations contain treated cellulose material that is able to effectively prevent these underground insects. For the best results, keep a close eye on these means of prevention by monitoring the bait traps approximately every three months. Remember to make sure the queen termite is gone or else theyll return!

Another means of discouraging these pests from eating away at your wood is to pre-treat vulnerable areas while the house is in the construction phase. The most vulnerable areas would include the interiors of walls, door and window casings, supports and wood framing.

A technician who is qualified in termite control practices will be able to apply a borate solution to the exterior walls, wood studs, and piers for protection that will be long lasting. Once the borate solution has absorbed fully into the wood and has dried, this preventative treatment will prevent them from eating the wood and from being able to make their way into untreated areas.

Another type of termite control protection you can utilize is to pre-treat the soil that the dwelling will be built on. The traditional soil pre-treatment process involves two steps. The first step is for the ground to be treated before the foundation is poured. A second treatment is then administered around the exterior of the house once the building is complete. This can offer years of protection against these pesky wood-consuming bugs because it is a highly effective method.

Another termite control technique that is beneficial for those who live in areas where subterranean species are common is to get an annual inspection of your home by a trained pest control business. These pests can be extremely destructive for homeowners and new home builders, so taking a defensive stance against them is strongly recommended.

Ask the pest extermination specialist all of the questions you have regarding the protection of your home against any future infestations. The best strategy is to be prepared and to protect your home in every way possible from the damage that these menacing fiends can do!

Need Pest Control Services in Seattle? Call Guardian Pest Control

Although seeing termites, ants, rodents such as mice or rats, or even bedbugs can be horrifying in itself; there are a few unpleasant realities that make pest control services essential. Did you know that failing to hire an exterminator to deal with pests can result in structural damage that potentially costs thousands of dollars to fix?

Unfortunately, pests are more prevalent than you think: In 2015, Time Magazine wrote that the pest control industry in the United States provided services to over 10% of American homes. It also claimed that at least 2% of homes in Seattle reported evidence of rats while cockroaches, ants, and termites are all more common than you would wish.

At Guardian Home, we understand the urgent need to treat your home if an infestation occurs. Our exterminators are qualified and experienced in removing all manner of pests from residential properties. Here is a list of our pest control services in Seattle.

There are occasions when you need recurring services which is why we offer a Monthly/Bi-Monthly option to our customers, so they have further peace of mind.

Dont risk illness or injury by trying to perform DIY pest control services. You need specialized equipment and years of experience to do it correctly. Thats why you should call on the Guardian Homes extermination team today.

Termites possess the enzymes, bacteria, and protozoa in their guts which allows them to digest cellulose. This is the organic fibrous material found in wood and plants. Termite colonies can contain anywhere from a few thousand to a few million. Worst of all, they do their damage unseen and can remain hidden for months. The average homeowner has to spend $3,000 to repair termite damage, but in some cases, these pests can eat into your homes foundations.

There are an estimated 700 ant species in the United States although fewer than 5% infest homes. The ones to watch out for are Carpenter Ants, Odorous Horse Ants, Moisture Ants, Pharaoh Ants, and Pavement Ants.

From a nature perspective, the ability of rodents to adapt to different environments is remarkable. However, we know that Seattle homeowners will not appreciate this fact when they see rats running in their basement! In the pacific northwest, the main species of rats are Roof Rats and Norway Rats. The two most common mice types are the House Mouse and Deer Mouse.

As the common bedbug has unfortunately adapted so well to human environments, it is arguably the pest that causes most problems. Up until a decade ago, Seattle residents believed that bedbug infestations were a thing of the past. Alas, they have made a resurgence in recent years and, contrary to popular myth, bedbugs are NOT attracted to dirt.

Instead, they are attracted to body heat and exhaled carbon dioxide. bedbugs feed on blood, and while they dont transmit diseases to humans, they can cause an allergic reaction. In many cases, it is necessary for our bedbug exterminator team to treat the issue more than once.

Also known as stinging insects, beehives and wasp nests are a nightmare for any homeowner in Seattle as they can completely ruin your summer. A wasp colony is capable of causing severe harm to humans and could even kill if there are enough of them. Then there is the small matter of allergic reaction.

Cockroaches are another type of pest notorious for their adaptability and capacity to survive hostile environments. Common roaches in the United States include Oriental, Asian, Brownbanded, American, and German. Cockroaches are capable of causing disease as they emit secretions from different parts of their bodies. Their intestinal disease organisms are passed on to humans and can cause allergic reactions such as asthma.

No pest control service is complete without spider extermination. Although the vast majority of spiders are beneficial, there are a few dangerous species in the pacific northwest region including the Brown Recluse, Black Widow, and Aggressive House Spider. Admittedly, the first two species are not native to Seattle, but they can be transported here.

Flying Ants vs. Termites, Termite or Ant? – Orkin.com

Posted: at 3:45 am

Differences Between Ants and Termites

For many homeowners, the first obvious sign of termite infestation is a swarm of flying insects. However, not all swarming insects are termites some are flying ants. Pest control experts are trained to distinguish between flying ants and termites based on a few physical characteristics.

Although ants and termites vary in many ways, it can be hard for people to distinguish between them at first glance. In order to identify either pest, it is crucial to know the differences between them.

Whats the Difference?

Flying ants have:

More information on ants

Termites have straight antennae and wide bodies without pinched waists. They are characteristically black or dark brown. Swarmers, or flying termites, have clear front and back wings that are the same length. More about what a termite looks like.

In contrast, ants have elbowed antennae and pinched waists. Their bodies can be black, brown, or reddish. Flying ants have two pairs of brown-tinted wings that differ in size.

Both ants and termites live in large colonies with designated caste systems. Termites can be found in decaying trees, stumps, wood debris, lumber, and the wooden members of a structure. Some ants, like carpenter ants, also inhabit wood and the wooden parts of structures. Termites can cause serious structural damage since they eat the wood, while carpenter ants do not eat wood and thus generally do not cause structural damage.

The diets of these two pests differ, as ants are omnivores and termites feed on cellulose, which is a nutrient-rich material found in plants. Ants primarily eat nectar, seeds, other insects, and food debris found around and inside homes. On the other hand, termites consume mainly wood, paper, and other cellulose-based products.

Ants go through four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Worker ants live for a few months, while queens can live for years. In contrast, the termite life cycle includes egg, nymph (larvae), and adult phases. Most termites survive for a couple years, while termite queens may live for decades.

Both types of pests have similar reproductive cycles. During warm months, fertile winged ants and termites fly from their nests to mate and establish new colonies. In ant species, the male partners typically die after mating with the females. After termites mate, both male and female partners live on and continue to expand their new colonies. Both ants and termites lose their wings after mating.

Louis Farrakhan: Im Not An Anti-Semite. Im Anti-Termite …

Editor’s Note: Don’t let the smiling face of this devil fool you. He is a hater. He’s said “Jews are my enemy” and “White folks are going down.”He’s called Trump supporters “racists.”Farrakhan has called for 10,000 volunteers to rise up and “stalk and kill” white people. He’s aligned with a religious/political ideology that is opposed to America, but he’ll tell you he’s just a sweet ole grandpa. Don’t believe it for a moment.

The mainstream left doesnt even attempt to hide its hate, intolerance and racism. These are indeed astonishing times we are living in. The very anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan was at Aretha Franklins funeral, alongside Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Bill Clinton all of whom stood center stage. And now this. Twitter, of course, removes conservatives for the slightest infraction, real or trumped-up, but Farrakhan continues to spew his venom unhindered.

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan addressed a gathering in Detroit on Sunday to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Million Man March, and used it as a platform to launch yet another attack on Jews, calling them termites.

Farrakhan posted clips of his speech to his Twitter account on Tuesday.

To the members of the Jewish community that dont like me, thank you very much for putting my name all over the planet Im not mad at you, cause youre so stupid, Farrakhan said.

So when they talk about Farrakhan, call me a hater, you know they do, call me an antisemite stop it! Im anti-termite! I dont know nothing about hating somebody because of their religious preference.

Farrahkan also spoke out against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh

New York Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) urged fellow Democrats to condemn Farrakhans statements about Jews.

Farrakhans vile statements against Whites and Jews have been ignored by my fellow Democrats, Hikind said in a press release Wednesday. There is nothing subtle about this modern-day Goebbels hatred. This racist doesnt even hide behind an anti-Israel statement; he just publicly attacks Jews and the Jewish religion, and works to incite hatred and racism among his followers. Even worse, Democrats continue to give him a pass. Former President Bill Clinton sat next to him at Aretha Franklins funeral. It was appalling!

Earlier this year, photographs of Farrakhan meeting with then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and the Congressional Black Caucus in 2005 werereleased(see above) after being suppressed to prevent any damage to Obamas presidential ambitions.

Termite Control South Africa – pestcontrolpros.co.za

Posted: February 2, 2019 at 3:41 am

Termites are often referred to as white ants as they resemble an ant. Unlike ants, termites cause extensive structural damage to properties if they are not controlled by qualified pest control specialists. They are white, as the name white ant implies, with soft bodies and hard powerful jaws which allow them to chew through all wooden materials. In Gauteng, our climate promotes termite infestation, thus, we have two prevalent termite species namely subterranean and harvester termites. Harvester termites attack lawns leaving behind round patches of stripped grass whereas subterranean termites attack all wood within structures.

Termites live within the soil and need to maintain contact with the ground or other moisture source to survive.

The little white ants are not found out in the open, rather, the damage they cause is more easily traced.

Therefore, most clients contact pest control companies like ourselves for a professional opinion!

However, there are several tell tail signs which indicate the presence of termites, namely:

Termites feed on any wood product which contains cellulose including cupboards, skirtings, doors, frames, lawns and even your roof rafters. When feeding, termites eat from the inside out, leaving only a thin layer of timber or paint with NO structural integrity.

Swift termite control is extremely important as insurance companies usually do not cover the damage caused.

This is where we as the Pest Control Pros come in! Our pest control services extend to providing free quotations with recommendations and a termite control plan. Where a subterranean termite infestation is prevalent we would need to treat the nests. This is done by drilling through your foundations under the floor and injecting a termiticide to prevent future infestations. If harvester termites are found on your lawn, we use high pressure pumps to inject the nests with termiticide.

Termite Treatment – North Jersey Termite

Posted: January 31, 2019 at 7:43 pm

There are several different termite treatment options available depending upon your termite situation.

Conventional termite treatment involves the use of liquid termiticides. We treat actively foraging termites using Termidor.

Termidor is EPA registered and approved and is applied at very low rates. Typically, the active ingredient (fipronil) is just 0.06% of the finished solution.

A Termidor termite treatment begins with trenching. 6 -to- 8 inch deep trenches are dug along the exterior foundation walls where termites are actively foraging. Next, we inject the trenches with Termidor until absorbed into the soil, we then back-fill each trench with un-treated soil. In certain instances when we are unable to trench because of obstructions such as roots or large rocks, we then treat the soil adjacent to the foundation by long rod, injecting Termidor at 6 -to- 12 intervals.

When it is not possible to trench because of concrete slabs, porches or blacktop surfaces, drilling is required. Slabs must be drilled vertically at 12 inch intervals and no more than 6 inches from the foundation. The soil below the slab must be treated from the bottom of the slab to the top of the footing. This method of drilling and treating is also used for dirt-filled porches and stress cracks sometimes found in slabs.

Once the concrete or black-top is drilled, an appropriate low pressure injection method [liquid or foam] is used to treat below the surface of the slab. Following the injection process, all drill holes are then neatly sealed.

When your home is treated with Termidor, a Treated Zone is established around the home. With a Termidor barrier in place, Termites cant smell it, see it, or feel it. Since they dont know its there, they forage freely in a treated area.

Once a termite has ingested or contacted Termidor treated material with its body, it becomes a carrier. Every other termite it contacts will be infectedwhich in turn infects every other termite it contacts. But Termidor termite treatment works slowly, letting termites contact many others before dying themselves. With Termidor there is no odor and no worry for people or pets.

In situations where the infested structure is within 50 feet of a well or 100 feet of a body of water, termite baits and wood treatment applications may be the only treatment options.

Adding foam enhances the coverage capabilities over conventional treatment methods. Generally, a combination of both foam and liquids are required on most treatments. The rapidly expanding action of Termidor foam helps penetrate into remote areas where conventional liquids will not go or reach. Foam is primarily injected under concrete slabs, behind brick or other veneers, into framed walls, hollow block voids and shallow crawl spaces.

Since gaps can occur under slabs when dirt settles, traditional liquids are not always able to provide complete coverage. Therefore, the soil not treated or the underside of the exposed slab provide pathways on which termites can travel.

By using Termidor foam, the foaming action of Termidor is able to carry the pesticide up and onto the bottom of the slab. Termidor foam also provides outstanding lateral coverage to the soil beneath.

This has proved to be invaluable for some homes where settling has occurred underneath the slab. Termidor foam does this by precisely targeting the potential problem area. In most cases foam treatments will provide outstanding coverage and produce results in a relatively short time frame.

BORA-CARE is a patented liquid formulation that protects structural wood from attacking wood destroying organisms. It contains disodium octaborate tetrahydrate also called DOT, a (borate compound) as the active ingredient and also contains glycol penetrants to help the active ingredient diffuse and permeate into the wood. BORA-CARE works by eliminating wood as a food source and or harborage for termites, carpenter ants, wood-destroying beetles and decay fungi.

A BORA-CARE treatment is odorless, does not affect painting, staining or gluing and does not change the appearance of the wood. Most importantly, BORA-CARE treated wood is nontoxic to humans and animals.

BORA-CARE provides double protection by acting as both a contact poison and a repellent to termites. As a contact poison, it will kill termites that come in contact with treated wood. University studies show that BORA-CARE will provide 100 percent mortality to termites in just five days. This is an advantage, since termites are repelled or eliminated before wood damage occurs.

Wood Injection: BORA-CARE is the recommended treatment of choice for wood and wall void treatments. BORA-CARE can be applied as a surface spray on areas such as sills, rim-joists and sub-flooring. Additionally, localized infestations can be treated by drilling small holes into the wood. Holes are then injected with BORA-CARE, thus filling the termite tunnels inside the wood.

Wall Void Foam Injection: Another technique for applying BORA-CARE is foaming. In existing structures where construction is complete, wood can be treated without removing sheet rock or other wall covering by drilling small holes (at least one per void) and applying an expandable dry foam with the consistency of a shaving cream to the interior portions of a wall void. When we want to maximize horizontal coverage to specific areas, [e.g. on sill plates and around wall studs] a foam treatment both protects and provides the best coverage of imbedded termite infestations both on and inside the woods surface.

When termites feed on wood, they eat from the inside out, and the outer surface usually remains intact. This secretive nature makes it possible for termites to remain undetected for years. While damage to wood may not be readily apparent, there are other signs of a termite infestation that homeowners should know about.

Mud tubes on your homes foundation are a major clue that subterranean termites are present. These termites build tunnels out of mud to travel between their underground nests and their food sources. Piles of discarded insect wings, bubbling or uneven paint, or wood that sounds hollow when tapped on are some other signs to watch out for.

Drywood termites can be very hard to detect. Keep an eye out for small, round holes on the surface of wooden objects. You may also see piles of sawdust-like material around your home. This material is termite excrement.

Since these signs are easy to miss, its a good idea to have your home inspected by a professional. The National Pest Management Association recommends getting a termite inspection every one to three years.
